Upfront offers a complete range of solutions for whey protein processors to optimize the value of the raw material. Whey protein prices increase with higher levels of purity and Rhobust® EBA chromatographic separation has been proven to offer not only >95% pure protein isolate, but also has the flexibility to produce individual purified protein fractions. Hence, it is possible to manufacture proteins with a range of biological or technical functionalities that represent significantly more value than the simple non-separated protein fraction from crude whey streams. Examples of new product opportunities using whey raw material are:
In a Rhobust® EBA process unclarified, crude whey stream is loaded directly onto the EBA columns where the specific proteins are captured. Subsequent elution, concentration and drying steps result in a range of pure, functional protein products.
Note that when separating one or more proteins from the main stream by a Rhobust® EBA process, with no pre-treatment of the whey, it is still feasible to maintain an existing WPC business. On the other hand, the Rhobust® technology can be configured as a complete Whey Protein Refinery with multiple product outputs and total production flexibility.
A Rhobust® Whey Protein Refinery has the capability to switch readily between different products depending on protein market requirements. This allows the business to adapt to changing market conditions in a fast and flexible manner.
Whey Protein Isolate
Get the high-quality peptide-free WPI from the cost competitive Rhobust® process. With the combination of selective adsorption and EBA, a new revolutionary method for large-scale WPI production is in place.
Immunoglobulin G from whey
This process is highly flexible in terms of purity grades. By controlling pH, you can decide for an IgG isolate product or an IgG enriched product from run to run. When applying the high flow rates from Rhobust® EBA, the process becomes economically viable. New ingredients opportunities are possible.
Separation of alpha-lactalbumin and beta-lactoglobulin from whey
By use of adsorption chromatography a palette of separation opportunities for separating alpha-lactalbumin and beta-lactoglobulin exists, enabling control of product purity. When isolating one of the molecules through binding to the adsorbent an isolate stream as well as an enrichment stream is generated. Depending on the strategy either alpha-lactalbumin or beta-lactoglobulin can be adsorbed. Alternatively, both molecules can be adsorbed from the whey stream and subsequently be eluted sequentially as protein isolates separated from each other.
Lactoferrin and lactoperoxidase from milk or whey
Upfront’s process for producing LF and LP from either milk or whey is second to none; the process can match market standard product purities at an extremely fast process flow. Thus, Rhobust® EBA enables low cost LF and LP production, and thereby lowers value-large volume applications.
